About the University of Melbourne and Scholarship
The public research university known as the University of Melbourne is located in Melbourne, Australia. The second-oldest university in all of Australia, it was founded in 1853, making it the first university in Victoria. While various other campuses are dispersed around Victoria, its main campus is located in Parkville, an inner district to the north of Melbourne’s CBD.
The University of Melbourne was founded by the colony of Victoria in the 19th century and is one of the six sandstone institutions in Australia. It belongs to the Group of Eight, Universitas 21, the McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Since 1872, there have been several residential colleges affiliated with the university that provide lodging for students and faculty as well as hosting academic, sporting, and cultural events. In addition to the Melbourne Business School, Melbourne Law School, and Melbourne Medical School, the university offers fifteen graduate degrees. The University of Melbourne was ranked first in Australia and fourteenth overall in the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings.
Melbourne was ranked 33rd overall (first in Australia) in the annual World University Rankings published by Times Higher Education in 2021–2022. It was ranked 33rd among institutions globally in 2022 by SCImago Institutions Rankings. The most current CWTS Leiden Ranking placed Melbourne first nationally and 29th globally. The institution ranked first in Australia and 33rd globally in the Academic Rating of World Universities (ARWU) league rating for 2021. The QS World University Subject Rankings 2020 rank the University of Melbourne in positions 10 for law, 12 for education, 16 for accounting and finance, 17 for social policy and administration, 19 for sociology, 22 for environmental studies, and 23 for linguistics.
