The University of Queensland is now accepting applications for its partially funded Donald Tugby Postgraduate Archaeological Research Prize.

About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, is home to the main campus of the Australian public research university known as the University of Queensland (UQ, or Queensland University). It was started in the year 1902. One of the six sandstone universities—a colloquial term for the oldest university in each state—UQ was founded in 1909 by the Queensland government and is one of the six institutions in total.

The University of Queensland is rated second in Australia and 42nd globally in 2023 based on the combined rankings of the three most prestigious schools in the world. UQ is also a founding member of edX, the top Group of Eight institutions in Australia, and the Association of Pacific Rim Institutions, a global organization that promotes high-quality research.

The bulk of the inner riverfront area of St. Lucia, which is situated southwest of Brisbane’s central business district, is occupied by the main St. Lucia campus. The Gatton campus and the Mayne Medical School are the two biggest UQ locations and facilities in Queensland. The UQ-Ochsner Clinical School in Louisiana, United States, and the UQ North America headquarters in Washington, D.C. are two of UQ’s international locations.

The university offers associate, bachelor, master, doctoral, and further doctorate degrees through a college, a graduate school, and six faculties. Molecular Bioscience Institute, Boeing Research, and Technology Australia Center, Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, and UQ Dow Centre for Sustainable Engineering Innovation are just a few of the more than 100 research institutes and centers UQ houses and provides research programs at.

The institution recently completed some notable research projects, including the development of high-performance superconducting MRI magnets for on-the-go scanning of human limbs and the discovery of the HPV vaccine that prevents cervical cancer. The COVID-19 vaccine is also currently undergoing human trials. UQ has received several rankings over the years, including being ranked 36th globally by U.S. News in 2022, 47th by the Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2022, 50th globally by the QS in 2023, 53rd globally by the Times Higher Education in 2023, 37th globally by the CWTS Leiden Ranking in 2022, and 33rd globally by the NTU in 2022.

The endowment was created in 2010 and is funded by the $23,000 endowment contribution from Dr. Donald Tugby, who from 1958 to 1986 taught anthropology at The University of Queensland. Dr. Tugby started a substantial archaeological investigation on North Stradbroke Island and brought statistics to archaeology. By enabling postgraduate student engagement in the international archaeological research community, the award seeks to promote and recognize excellence in archaeological research.
