Robert Gordon University is now accepting applications for its fully-funded SOCAR Scholarship.

About Robert Gordon University and Scholarship

The Scottish city of Aberdeen is home to Robert Gordon University, often known as RGU or Oilthigh Raibeart Ghrdain in Scottish Gaelic. It was created in the 18th century by Robert Gordon, a wealthy merchant from Aberdeen, and evolved into a university in 1992. Before that, it was numerous adult and technical education institutes in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is one of the city’s two universities; the other one being the University of Aberdeen. The only RGU campus in Aberdeen is in Garthdee, to the southwest of the city. RGU is a campus-based institution.

The university confers degrees across a broad spectrum of subjects, mainly in the professional, technical, health, and creative fields that are most relevant to business and industry, ranging from BA/BSc to Ph.D. Additionally, several conventional academic degree programs are provided, including those in the social sciences. The university’s academic and research personnel also conducts research in a variety of fields.

The university is a result of the various educational institutions that grew up in Aberdeen to offer adults technical, vocational, and artistic training, primarily in the evenings and part-time. Robert Gordon’s Hospital was established in the middle of the 18th century to provide the poor with a basic education and a reasonable start in life.

It was first known as Robert Gordon’s Technical College after multiple mergers between these institutions, and then, after more changes, it changed its name to Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology in 1965. From that point on, it started to do more research and offer degree-level education. In 1992, it changed its status to a university. Today, it mostly provides full-time students with day classes. It has never been a polytechnic, which was never a part of the Scottish educational system, unlike numerous modern institutions in the UK that were established following government changes in 1992.

The Guardian’s topic league tables show that it ranked first in Scotland for four subjects in 2017 (health professions, journalism, architecture, and pharmacy), and third in the UK for three other subjects. In its 2012 University Guide, The Sunday Times named RGU the Best Modern University in the UK. Oxford Brookes University has previously won the award each of the previous ten years. The 2012 prize went to RGU in part because of evaluations of the caliber of its research and teaching, but it was also given because it had the greatest employment record of any UK institution. The 2013 edition of The Times Good University Guide ranked RGU the best modern university in the UK.

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) launched the SOCAR Scholarship Program to financially support Azeri students studying at prestigious universities overseas. Each year, RGU is pleased to welcome several SOCAR-funded students to Aberdeen. Undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral engineering students at Robert Gordon University are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The SOCAR Scholarship Program is administered by the company’s Baku training division.
