About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The University of Queensland (UQ) is an Australian public research institution situated mostly in Brisbane, the state capital. UQ was founded by the Queensland government in 1909 and is one of the six sandstone universities, which refers to the oldest institution in each state. The University of Queensland is placed second in Australia and 42nd globally in 2023 according to a composite of the three most prestigious international university rankings. UQ is also a founding member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, a global association of research-intensive universities, and edX, the leading Group of Eight in Australia.

Following World War I, the University grew quickly and outgrew its inner-city location. An additional property in Victoria Park (currently used by the Medical School) was acquired in 1922. Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne supplied monies four years later to purchase the St Lucia property where the University’s main campus is presently located. Construction on the St Lucia site began in 1937, and the first structure afterward dubbed the Forgan Smith structure after the Premier at the time, was finished in 1939. During WWII, it was the advanced headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.

In 1999, UQ developed a substantial campus in the provincial capital of Ipswich, replacing the Challinor Centre mental health institution. This campus was transferred to the University of Southern Queensland in January 2015, however, UQ continued to teach at the USQ Ipswich campus until 2016 to help select students with their studies. Two Nobel laureates (Peter C. Doherty and John Harsanyi) are among the graduates and former workers of UQ, along with over a hundred Olympians who have won multiple gold medals and 117 Rhodes Scholars.
