Private Ivy League research institution Princeton University is located in Princeton, New Jersey. One of the nine colonial colleges founded before the American Revolution, Princeton is the fourth-oldest institution of higher study in the nation. The College of New Jersey was founded in Elizabeth in 1746 as Princeton. The institution moved to Newark in 1747 and then nine years later to its current location. After becoming a university in 1896, it changed its name to Princeton University.
Princeton is renowned for its upperclassmen dining organizations and has a system of residential colleges. On campus, there are over 500 student organizations. Princeton students actively participate in a wide variety of contemporary and historical traditions. The university is an NCAA Division I college and a member of the Ivy League. The Princeton Tigers, the school’s sports team, have the most conference championships to their name and have sent several athletes to the Olympics.
The Princeton Arts Fellowship, which is supported in part by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, David E. Kelley Society of Fellows in the Arts, and Maurice R. Greenberg Scholarship Fund, will be given to creatives whose work has been deemed to show extraordinary promise in any field of artistic practice and instruction. Early-career visual artists, filmmakers, poets, novelists, playwrights, designers, directors, and performance artists who would find it advantageous to spend two years teaching and working in an artistically active university community should apply.
Formal instruction is anticipated for the two academic years that the Princeton Arts Fellows are enrolled at Princeton University (September 1 through July 1). Normally, fellows will be expected to teach one course every semester with the Dean of the Faculty’s agreement, but they may be requested to take on an artistic task instead of a class, such as directing a play or choreographing a dance alongside students. Despite the reduced teaching load, the school nonetheless wants Fellows to be involved, complete members of its community who regularly contact students throughout the academic year.

Eligibility Criteria for Princeton Arts Fellowship
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for Princeton Arts Fellowship at Princeton University:
- The applicants should be early-career composers, conductors, musicians, choreographers, visual artists, filmmakers, poets, novelists, playwrights, designers, directors, and performance artists—this list is not intended to be exhaustive—who would find it advantageous to spend two years teaching and working in an artistically vibrant university community.
- There is no requirement for applicants to be citizens of the United States.
- No applications will be accepted from Princeton Ph.D. holders.
- A Ph.D. or any other advanced degree cannot be obtained through this program.
Application Process for Princeton Arts Fellowship
Fill out the application form and attach the following information. Send a curriculum vitae, the names and phone numbers of three references (please do not ask for or arrange for references to send letters in advance of a request from the search committee), and work samples (such as writing samples, images of your work, links to performances on video, etc.). Please also submit a 750-word proposal outlining your plans for the two years of the fellowship, your plans to engage in teaching and/or production in Princeton’s arts community, and how you have promoted diversity and inclusion in your artistic practice, research, and/or teaching.
Note: Princeton Arts Fellowships is only open to applicants twice in their lifetime.
