The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies’ Academy Scholars Program seeks out and supports outstanding scholars who are just beginning their academic careers and whose work combines excellence in a social science discipline with a command of the language and knowledge or expertise of nations or regions outside of the United States or Canada. Their research should cross traditional disciplinary boundaries and clarify comparative, global, or domestic problems from the past or the present.

The Academy Scholars are an exclusive group of people who have initiative, ingenuity, and inventiveness and whose work demonstrates potential as a basis for careers in research universities or international organizations.

Academy Scholars are appointed to the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, for a two-year in-residence postdoctoral fellowship. They receive significant financial and research support, allowing them to carry out thorough research projects and enhance their talents in their preferred disciplines and locations. They gather together for informal get-togethers, dinners, and seminars to discuss cutting-edge, multidisciplinary approaches to their work. They receive guidance from the Harvard Academy Senior Scholars, a group of professors who serve as a selection committee, take part in Harvard Academy activities, and are dedicated to helping Academy Scholars realize their full potential.

The Harvard Academy accepts applications from a wide range of backgrounds to create a broad community of academics with a range of experiences, viewpoints, and research methodologies.

Aim and Benefits of Harvard University Academy Scholars Program

Five or six Academy Scholars are selected each year for two-year in-residence appointments with a $75,000 yearly stipend, to be completed within a three-year time frame. The postdoctoral fellowship must be accepted for Year 1 no later than the fall following the offer. The commencement of Year 1 cannot be delayed or postponed.

Academy Scholars may request a one-time leave of absence (up to 12 months) between Years 1 and 2, but only to accept or maintain a tenure-track teaching job. During their appointment, Academy Scholars are not permitted to accept any additional funds, honors, or duties.

Eligibility Criteria for Harvard University Academy Scholars Program

The winners of advanced doctorate candidates in the social sciences and Ph.D. holders in related fields (within two years of the commencement date of August 1, 2024) are eligible for these prizes. People who currently hold or recently finished a different Harvard postdoctoral fellowship are not eligible to apply.

Application Procedure for Harvard University Academy Scholars Program

Are you interested and eligible? Log in or register for the scholarship here. The completed application will contain:

  • Curriculum vitae (CV), with publications listed
  • Research proposal including conceptual goals, proposed methodologies, and planned disciplinary work, limited to 2000 words.
  • One piece of academic writing of no more than 50 pages in length, such as a chapter from a Ph.D. dissertation or an article from an academic publication with a peer review
  • a copy of the transcript from your Ph.D. program
  • Three recommendation letters must be immediately and privately uploaded to the online application before September 22, 2023.

Note: The deadline for submission of all application documents is September 22, 2023. Late applications are not accepted by the institution.

The three letters of recommendation are one of the many components of the application that must be provided online in pdf format. On the homepage of The Harvard Academy’s website, there is an APPLY ONLINE link that will take you to the online application.

The deadline for receiving everything is September 22, 2023. The selection procedure then starts. Lacking documents will prevent the Selection Committee from giving an applicant a favorable evaluation. The results will be revealed in December 2023.

Bibliographies, footnotes, and endnotes are all optional but can be incorporated into your proposed research statement. If references are included, they will not count toward the research statement’s 2000-word limit.

Regarding transcripts from foreign institutions: The university reviewers review a lot of applications from students attending foreign institutions, so they ask for as much official documentation that looks like a transcript as your university’s registrar can provide for all graduate work, including any Master’s or Ph.D. programs you have previously completed or are currently enrolled in. Your school most likely gets such requests frequently and might provide you with the relevant paperwork upon request.
