About the University of Melbourne and Scholarship

In Melbourne, Australia, there is a public research university called the University of Melbourne. It was founded in 1853, making it the oldest university in Victoria and the second-oldest institution in all of Australia. Its main campus is located in Parkville, an inner suburb to the north of Melbourne’s central business district, one of the numerous campuses spread out around Victoria.

One of the six sandstone universities in Australia, the University of Melbourne was established in the 19th century by the colony of Victoria. It belongs to the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, the Group of Eight, Universitas 21, and the McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University. Since 1872, the university has had a long-standing affiliation with several residential colleges that provide lodging for students and faculty as well as hosting academic, sports, and cultural events. There are eight colleges located on the main campus and in the nearby suburbs.

The university collaborates with numerous research institutes and centers, including the Grattan Institute, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, and Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. The university is made up of ten distinct academic departments.

In addition to the Melbourne Business School, Melbourne Law School, and Melbourne Medical School, the institution includes fifteen graduate programs. The University of Melbourne was rated first in Australia by Times Higher Education in 2023 and 34th overall by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and it was placed 35th internationally in 2020. Graduates of the University of Melbourne include five governors-general and four Australian prime ministers. The University of Melbourne has had the most Nobel Laureates of any Australian university, with eight having taught, studied, or conducted research there.

Once their thesis has been turned in, the recipients of this fellowship are Ph.D. and MPhil graduate students at the University of Melbourne who are enrolled via the Faculty of Science. The prize has a value of $3000 to $5000.
