The University of Queensland is now accepting applications for its partially funded EY Energy Scholarship.

About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The University of Queensland, the state’s first university, was established by an act of the State Parliament in 1909, and on April 16, 1910, the first UQ Senate nominations were gazetted, marking the beginning of the institution’s formal existence. Old Government House on George Street, Brisbane, was the first location to offer instruction. There were 83 students (60 men and 23 women) enrolled in three faculties in the first year: Arts, Science, and Engineering.

The University rapidly flourished after World War I, outgrowing its inner-city site within a short period. The Medical School presently occupies the extra property that was obtained in Victoria Park in 1922. After four years, Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister, Miss Mary Emelia Mayne, donated money to purchase the St. Lucia property where the university’s current main campus is situated. The first structure, subsequently known as the Forgan Smith structure in honor of the then-Premier, was finished on the St. Lucia site in 1939 after construction began. It was transformed during World War II into the cutting-edge command center for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.

The University and the Queensland Agricultural College joined forces in 1990 at (now Gatton), 80 kilometers west of Brisbane, becoming the State’s two oldest higher education institutions and resulting in a significant rise in enrollments. The two schools have a long history of working together on teaching and research projects. The old Queensland Agricultural College began enrolling students in 1897.

The Challinor Centre mental health hospital had occupied the location where UQ constructed a sizable campus in Ipswich’s provincial center in 1999. The University of Southern Queensland took over this campus in January 2015, however, UQ continued to provide classes there until 2016 to help certain students finish their degrees there.

A yearly grant from Ernst & Young maintains the EY Energy Scholarship, which was established in 2013.
