About the University of Tasmania and Scholarship
Australia’s Tasmania is home to the public research institution known as the University of Tasmania (UTAS). It is the fourth-oldest university in Australia and was founded in 1890. Modeled after the colleges at Oxford and Cambridge, Christ College, one of the university’s residential colleges, was initially suggested in 1840 in Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Franklin’s Legislative Council. It was established in 1846, making it the oldest tertiary institution in the nation. A member of both the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning and the worldwide Association of Commonwealth Universities, the university is built of sandstone.
With connections to 20 specialized research institutes and cooperative research centers, the university provides a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees in several fields. The university’s numerous 5-rating ratings (far above the global average) for research excellence from the Australian Research Council have been significantly influenced by its Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. The institution also offers postsecondary instruction at the Australian Maritime College, which serves as the country’s hub for maritime learning, research, and training.
The university’s research strengths are designed to benefit from Tasmania’s distinctive qualities, notably its natural setting and geographic position. The research has particular strengths in the fields of data, knowledge, and decision-making, as well as in the theme areas of health, the marine, antarctic, and maritime, and environment, resources, and sustainability.
The late Dr. Daphne Cooper, a lecturer at the School of Psychology from 1960 until her retirement in 1975, generously funded the Dr. Daphne Cooper Scholarship. She earned her bachelor’s degree in arts from the University of Tasmania in 1941 and went on to the University of Western Australia for postgraduate work in clinical psychology before earning her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Tasmania in 1971. Daphne’s lifelong interests in educational and developmental psychology are a result of her teaching experience in the early years of her career and her work as a career counselor for the Tasmanian Education Department.

Eligibility Criteria for Dr. Daphne Cooper Scholarship
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the Dr. Daphne Cooper Scholarship at the University of Tasmania:
- An applicant for a Ph.D. with a base living allowance stipend at the University rate, or a Ph.D. candidate who is currently enrolled in graduate school and has been given or received a base stipend at the University rate;
- An applicant for a PhD with a research project in the School of Psychological Sciences, or a PhD candidate who is currently enrolled in graduate school and has a research project in the School of Psychological Sciences.
Note that: Every application that satisfies the requirements will be automatically evaluated for the Scholarship.
Application Procedure for Dr. Daphne Cooper Scholarship
Applicants interested in applying for the Dr. Daphne Cooper Scholarship will need to complete an application on the University of Tasmania’s Apply Now website. Along with a Ph.D. and a base living allowance stipend, this scholarship is available to eligible applicants who meet the criteria. Make sure to indicate that you are also applying for the Dr. Daphne Cooper Scholarship within the application.
