About the University of Otago and Scholarship
The University of Otago is a public research institution in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, also known as Te Whare Wnanga o Tkou in Maori. Having been founded in 1869, Otago University is the oldest institution of higher learning in Oceania and New Zealand.
A Thomas Burns-led committee established the organization, and the Otago Provincial Council’s act granting it official status in 1869 was the last step in its development. Between 1874 to 1961, the Federal University of New Zealand incorporated the University of Otago and granted degrees in its name.
It’s well-known that Otago has a thriving student community, particularly with regard to the common flatting that occurs in old houses. Students at Otago University have a tradition of naming their flats. The university’s graduation song, Gaudeamus igitur, iuvenes dum sumus (“Let us rejoice, while we are young”), acknowledges that students will continue to rise to the challenge, if occasionally not in the way intended. The institution’s student journal, Critic, has been in circulation for the longest time in New Zealand.
Richard David Renfrew White Postgraduate Scholarship in Education was established with money provided in 1953 by a bequest from J. Waddell Smith and in 1977 by a bequest from Miss Ida G. White in honor of her father, David Renfrew White, who served as the former principal of Dunedin Teacher’s College and professor of education from 1909 to 1912.
Only recent Otago graduates in education with at least two years of teaching experience and plans to pursue postgraduate studies in education are eligible to apply for the scholarship. The scholarship recipient must state if they intend to continue teaching in New Zealand after the scholarship period has ended within one calendar month of the date of the award.
