About the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Scholarship
A public research institution in Huntsville, Alabama is known as the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The university has nine colleges, including graduate studies, professional & continuing studies, honors, business, education, engineering, nursing, professional & humanities & social sciences, and science. The institution is recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. There are about 10,000 students enrolled at the university. As a member of the University of Alabama System, it is categorized as one of the “R1: Doctoral Universities: Very High Research Activity” institutions.
Years went by before Huntsville finally got a publicly supported institution of higher learning. The University of Alabama Huntsville Center, an extension of the University of Alabama, began offering programs in January 1950. The original location for these studies was West Huntsville High School.
Wernher von Braun, a German rocket scientist who had been deported to the United States as part of Operation Paperclip after serving the Nazi regime, contributed to the establishment of a research institute in 1961, which offered cutting-edge engineering and science curricula to NASA scientists and engineers. As a result, the university’s focus changed. The building of this institution was located near US 72, which was soon renamed University Drive. Over time, the site grew south along Sparkman Drive to Interstate 565.
Although a “cap and gown” ceremony was held in Huntsville, UAH’s first undergraduate degrees were presented in May 1968 as part of the spring graduation ceremony at The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. The Board of Trustees for the University of Alabama System decided to declare UAH an independent and autonomous institution a year later. In 1970, Benjamin Graves, a 1942 University of Mississippi alumnus and current president of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, was chosen to lead UAH as its first president.
UAH was placed No. 128 for “Top Public Schools” and No. 263 for “National Universities” in the 2020 U.S. News & World Report “Best Colleges” report.
