About College of Wooster and Scholarship

In Wooster, Ohio, there is a private liberal arts institution called The College of Wooster. The University of Wooster was established in 1866 by the Presbyterian Church, although it has been formally non-sectarian since 1969. The college has been a co-ed school since its founding. It has roughly 2,000 students enrolled and belongs to the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, the Great Lakes Colleges Association, and The Five Colleges of Ohio.

The College of Wooster was established by Presbyterians in 1866, and when it first opened its doors in 1870, it had a student population of thirty men and four women and a faculty of five. The initial 20 acres (8.1 hectares), a sizable oak forest situated on a hilltop overlooking the town, was donated by Wooster resident Ephraim Quinby. Wooster was established to make it accessible to everyone, and Annie B. Irish received the institution’s first Ph.D. in 1882. Later in the same decade, Clarence Allen—the first black student—started his studies.

The five-story Old Main building, which served as the campus’s focal point, was destroyed by fire on December 11, 1901, in the early morning hours. It was quickly replaced by numerous new facilities, which, following extensive restorations in the previous 30 years, continue to serve as the principal locations for the faculty offices, labs, and classrooms. These include Taylor Hall, Scovel Hall, Severance Hall (all of which were designed by Lansing C. Holden), and Kauke Hall (located in the middle of the campus).

The Andrews Library, Flo K. Gault Library, Timken Science Library, and a music library housed at the Scheide Music Center make up the College of Wooster Libraries. Best recognized for valuing supervised undergraduate research, Wooster College. Among National Liberal Arts Colleges, it is rated 69th.
