About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
The University of Queensland was the first university in the state and was formally established on April 16, 1910, with the gazettal of nominations to the first UQ Senate. It was established by a 1909 Act of the State Parliament. In Brisbane’s Old Government House on George Street, instruction began in 1911. The first year included 83 students (60 men and 23 women), and three faculties (Arts, Science, and Engineering).
The University outgrew its inner-city position following World War I due to its fast growth. A second location in Victoria Park was purchased in 1922; it is presently home to the Medical School. Four years later, Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne contributed money to acquire the St. Lucia property where the university’s main campus is now situated.
The two oldest higher education institutions in the State came together in 1990 when the University amalgamated with the Queensland Agricultural College at (now Gatton), 80 kilometers west of Brisbane. This merger led to a significant rise in enrollments and brought together the two oldest higher education institutions in the State. The two schools have a long history of collaboration in teaching and research initiatives. The old Queensland Agricultural College admitted its first students in 1897.
The Challinor Centre mental health hospital had previously occupied the space where UQ constructed a significant campus in Ipswich, the provincial capital, in 1999. The University of Southern Queensland assumed ownership of this site in January 2015, although UQ continues to provide classes at the USQ Ipswich campus through the end of 2016 to help certain students finish their degrees.
Chin Family Trust Prize in Engineering and Computing was established to support and present opportunities for Chinese international students studying in the fields of engineering, computing, and IT at The University of Queensland in memory of the Chin family and the opportunities Jack Chin had in China and Australia that paved the way for his successful career.

Eligibility Criteria for Chin Family Trust Prize in Engineering and Computing
Candidates are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the Chin Family Trust Prize in Engineering and Computing at the University of Queensland:
- are an international student from the People’s Republic of China; and
- are full-time students enrolled in an accepted program (see list below); and
- possess at least 12 units of your authorized program finished.
Approved Program:
- Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours) or an Information Technology dual program
- Bachelor of Computer Science
- Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
- Bachelor of Engineering/ Master of Engineering or an Engineering dual program
- Bachelor of Information Technology
- Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) or a Computer Science dual program.
Selection Criteria
- Your academic performance in the courses you have taken so far;
- Leadership potential, as demonstrated by a brief essay, cover letter, and résumé included in the application; and
- Any other information that the selection committee deems pertinent to your application.
