About the Scholarship
The CSIRO Early Research Career CERC Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for scientists and engineers with fewer than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience who have just earned their doctorates. These fellowships are designed to develop the next generation of innovators into leaders.
The main objective of this postdoctoral research is to apply machine learning (ML) to high-stakes, human-centric choices like credit rating and sentences in the legal system. While ML algorithms have shown biases that disproportionately affect particular ethnicities and genders, fairness research has aided in the development of more equitable algorithms and a deeper comprehension of the many bias causes. Understanding how various bias sources combine to produce overall bias is still lacking, though. The fundamental objective of the research is to separate algorithmic bias from data bias in ML, with a focus on intersectional subgroups. The established methods will next be used to examine biases in human-machine collaboration and threatened species management.
Your main duty as a CERC fellow will be to carry out innovative research. You will work with CSIRO experts Sevvandi Kandanaarachchi, Cheng Soon Ong (Director MLAI FSP), Cecile Paris (Director CINTEL FSP), Iadine Chades, and Eirini Ntoutsi (Full Professor for Open Source Intelligence) from Bundeswehr University, Munich as part of a vibrant research team. You will produce conference and journal articles with the team, present your research at regional and worldwide conferences, and have the chance to take part in seminars and courses to hone your skills.
The goal is to foster your development as an independent researcher at the end of the project. You will be incorporated into the lively Data61 ecosystem throughout your trip, guaranteeing a supportive and enriching experience.

Fundamental Duties:

The annual remuneration for the post is between AU$92,000 and AU$101,000, with an extra 15.4% in superannuation. Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the CERC Postdoctoral Fellowships In Machine Learning:
- Citizens of Australia and New Zealand, Australian Permanent Residents, and holders of an Australian Work Permit are eligible to apply for this fellowship.
- A Ph.D. or the equivalent degree in a relevant field, such as computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, machine learning, or a related field, is required. Please be aware: You must have a maximum of three years’ worth (full-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience to qualify for this position.
- The capacity to program successfully in a relevant language, such as Python (others are acceptable, too, such as R/Matlab/Julia/C++).
- Strong oral and writing communication abilities with the capacity to successfully represent the research team both internally and publicly, including the presentation of research findings at national and international conferences.
- A strong track record of publishing in conferences or journals with peer review, as well as authoring scientific articles, reports, grant applications, or patents.
Australian/New Zealand citizens, Australian Permanent Residents, or those who already have or are eligible to get a valid working visa for the duration of the stipulated period may apply for this post. The submission of a national police check and possible compliance with additional security, medical, and character standards are prerequisites for appointment to this position.
